How do I send all my traffic to one URL for SEO purposes?

The days when every website began with www are now past. Most modern browsers now hide "www." from the beginning of a URL, and with the need to type URLs on mobile devices, it is usually desirable to make URLs as succinct as possible.

coreFORCE supports the ability to make www. an alias to your store domain. For example, if your domain is "myOnlineStore.com", coreFORCE can allow customers to visit either myOnlineStore.com or www.myOnlineStore.com and reach your site.

This may not be desirable for Search Engine Optimization, however, as search engines may see myOnlineStore.com and www.myOnlineStore.com as two different sites and accordingly drop your search ranking because of split traffic.

To turn off www. as an alias for your primary domain, you will need to add forwarding in coreFORCE.  Do the following:

  1. Go to Website > Domain Names.  First uncheck "include www" for your bare domain.
  2. Add a new domain name record with www.(your domain name) as the Domain Name and your bare domain as "Forward To".  Check the box "Permanent Redirect."  You can accept the defaults for the rest of the options.

You may need to clear the cache on your system (System > Clear Cache) for your changes to take effect immediately.

If you need help with this, feel free to contact Coreware support.

NOTE: a previous version of this article said that it was possible to send traffic to your primary domain by adding www as a CNAME record to the primary domain in DNS.  As of Dec 2021, this does not work for SEO purposes.
