Buy X Get Discount Price Rule Setup Guide

You can create promotional deals (price rules) in coreSTORE to be applied to itemsitem kits, item categories, and item tags, and you can create coupon codes for those deals. In order to set up Price Rules, go to the Inventory module, select the Price Rules sub-module (for more information, see Price Rules Sub-Module Overview), then click on the + Create Rule button.

(Note: You can only have one price rule for an itemitem kit, item category, or item tag at a time for a given date range. If you do create more than one price rule, coreSTORE will automatically use the latest one.)

There are a total of 5 different types of price rules (for an overview of these price rule types, see Price Rules and Coupons). This article shows you how to setup a Buy X Get Discount price rule.

Buy X Get Discount

This rule requires the customer to purchase X quantity of an item or item kits (or X quantity of items/item kits that are classified under a specific category or tag) to get 1 of the item or item kits (or 1 of the items/item kits that are classified under a specific category or tag) at a discount.

Examples: "Buy _ Get One _% Off!!!" OR "Buy _ Get One $_ Off!!!"

The first 10 options are all the same for every type of price rule. Shown below are examples of how a Buy X Get Discount price rule could be set up.

  • Rule Type (1): Select Buy X Get Discount from the drop-down list (shown belowA) (this field is required) [expands the screen to show options (11), (12), (13), (14), (15), (16), (17), (18), and (19)].
  • Rule Name (2): Input a name for the price rule (this field is required).
    • Percent Discount: If the discount is based upon percent off the regular selling price of one unit of a product if the customer buys a certain quantity of that product, you could name the price rule something like "Buy _ Get One _% Off!!!" For example, if you wanted a customer to get 1 unit of a particular item(s)/item kit(s) or any item/item kit that is classified under particular category(ies) or tag(s) at 5% off if the customer buys 2 units of that product, you could name the price rule "Buy 2 [the item(s)/item kit(s)/category(ies)/tag(s)] Get One 5% Off!!!"
    • Flat Discount: If the discount is based upon a fixed dollar amount off the regular selling price of one unit of a product if the customer buys a certain quantity of that product, you could name the price rule something like "Buy _ Get One $_ Off!!!" For example, if you wanted a customer to get 1 unit of a particular item(s)/item kit(s) or any item/item kit that is classified under particular category(ies) or tag(s) at $5 off if the customer buys 2 units of that product, you could name the price rule "Buy 2 [the item(s)/item kit(s)/category(ies)/tag(s)] Get One $5 Off!!!"
  • Description (3): Input a description for the price rule.
  • Start Date (4): Use the date picker tool (shown belowB) to choose a start date for the price rule (this field is required).
  • End Date (5): Use the date picker tool (shown belowB) to choose an end date for the price rule (this field is required).
  • Requires Coupon (6): Check this box if you only want a customer to have access to the price rule if they have a coupon/coupon code for the price rule [expands the screen to show (7) and (8)].
  • Coupon Code (7): Input a coupon code (can be made up of numbersletters, or both) for the coupon [only shows if (6) is checked].
  • Print Coupon On Receipt (8): Check this box if you want to have the coupon print on sale receipts [only shows if (6) is checked, and expands the screen to show (9)]
  • Spend Amount To Activate On Receipt (9): If you want the coupon to only print on sale receipts if the customer spends a certain amount of money during the sale, input the amount here.
  • Active (10): Check this box if the price rule is active.

When you select Buy X Get Discount from the drop-down list (A), the screen expands with the following options, where you will specify what item(s), item kit(s), item category(ies), and/or item tag(s) the price rule applies to, and the exact values of the price rule.

  • For Options (11), (12), (13), and (14): In order to select what the price rule applies to, click on the field, which will show the Type in a search term dialog (shown below - C). Narrow down what you are looking for by typing in keywords, and the options will show where the dialog was. To add a selection, click on it [highlighted in blue (shown below - D)], and it will be added to the field (shown below - E). If you selected the wrong one, just click the X button to delete it.
  • Select Items (11): If you want the price rule to only apply to a specific item or items, select them using this field.
  • Select Item Kits (12): If you want the price rule to only apply to a specific item kit or item kits, select them using this field.
  • Select Categories (13): If you want the price rule to only apply to a specific item category or categories, select them using this field.
  • Select Tags (14): If you want the price rule to only apply to a specific item tag or tags, select them using this field.
  • Quantity To Buy (15): Input the quantity of the product that the customer has to buy in order to get one additional unit at the discount input into (16) or (17). For every one of this quantity, the customer will get one additional unit at the discount. Continuing from the example in (2), you would input 2 here. For every 2 units of the product the customer buys, the customer will get one additional unit at the discount. For example, if the customer bought 4 units, the customer would get 2 additional units at the discount (this field is required).
